We’ve visited Jeju Island several times, and with our unique luck, it has rained every single time. Whenever we plan to stay longer, it’s as if the rain decides to accompany us for the duration of our visit. Ironically, the downpours only seem to cease the moment we head back to Seoul. While Jeju is renowned for its stunning landscapes in fair weather, we have discovered a different, equally charming side to the island during its rainier moments.
Our trips to Jeju always begin with high hopes for clear skies and sunshine. The island, as many would agree, is a paradise when the weather is favorable. From its beautiful beaches to its lush greenery, Jeju’s natural beauty is unmatched. However, our experiences have taught us that Jeju’s allure is not diminished by rain; in fact, it adds a layer of enchantment to the island.
On our most recent trip, the weather forecast was gloomy from the start. Rain poured down as we landed, and thick fog enveloped the island, creating a mystical atmosphere. The usually vibrant colors of Jeju were muted, giving way to a moody, cinematic landscape that we quickly grew to appreciate. Our drives along Jeju’s roads, particularly the famous 1100 Road to Hallasan National Park, were surreal. The fog created an ever-changing canvas, with moments of complete whiteout giving way to glimpses of the lush forest and dramatic peaks of Hallasan.
One of the highlights of our rainy Jeju adventures is the waterfalls. While these natural wonders are beautiful in any weather, the rain seems to make them even more spectacular. The constant downpour feeds the waterfalls, making them more powerful and creating a mesmerizing scene as they cascade down into the sea. Watching the water roar and crash against the rocks, framed by the mist, is a sight we’ll never forget.
Jeju’s coastline, often vibrant and bustling with activity, takes on a serene and tranquil vibe in the rain. The beaches, usually filled with tourists, are quiet, and the overcast skies cast a soft, diffused light over the landscape. It’s a different kind of beauty, one that is introspective and peaceful. Strolling along the shore, with the rhythmic sound of the rain and waves in the background, offers a perfect moment of reflection and connection with nature.
Despite the rain, we’ve found that Jeju’s charm is resilient. The island’s natural beauty, combined with the cozy atmosphere of rainy days, has given us a deeper appreciation for its unique character. The rain has a way of bringing out Jeju’s hidden gems, making our visits feel like a series of delightful discoveries. From the mysterious foggy landscapes to the dramatic, rain-fed waterfalls, Jeju in the rain is an experience all its own.
In conclusion, having bad weather during our visits to Jeju has turned out to be a blessing in disguise. It has allowed us to see a different, more introspective side of the island. Rain or shine, Jeju never fails to captivate us. We look forward to our next visit, and who knows, maybe the rain will once again be our constant companion, showing us yet another facet of this beautiful island.
