Our adventure began with a greeting of numerous stairs at the starting point, followed by rail and rope sections for steep climbing. We hiked during winter, facing few snow patches but battling the freezing temperature. The cold was so intense that our phones, cameras, and batteries went out. As we continued our ascent, a strong, chilling wind accompanied us, making the climb both challenging and exhilarating.

The trails are generally in good condition, with some rocky and uneven parts where you might need to watch your step. Regular maintenance ensures that the paths remain safe and navigable. However, it’s always a good idea to check the weather forecast and trail conditions before you head out.

Parking at Soyosan is convenient and affordable. There are designated parking lots near the trailhead, with a fee of approximately 3,000 KRW for the day. Clean and well-maintained bathrooms are available at the base of the mountain and at several points along the trails, ensuring a comfortable experience for all hikers.

Soyosan is a popular destination, especially during weekends and holidays. To avoid the crowds, plan your hike on a weekday or early in the morning. The mountain is particularly busy during the spring and autumn seasons when the weather is mild and the scenery is at its most breathtaking.

A small resting stop to take a break and enjoy the scenery.

As you ascend Soyosan, you’ll be treated to a variety of natural and historical sights. The mountain is home to two Buddhist shrines commemorating the revered Silla priests, Wonhyo and Uisang. These serene spots offer a moment of reflection and tranquility amidst your hike.

Don’t miss the charming Jaja Hermitage, a small temple nestled in the mountainside. The temple exudes a sense of peace and is a perfect spot to take a break and soak in the spiritual ambiance.

Soyosan is also famous for its small waterfalls and spring wells, which add to the mountain’s enchanting allure. These natural features provide a refreshing backdrop and are ideal for snapping some memorable photos.

In the middle of our climb, we encountered a fascinating phenomenon—smoke-like steam emerging from a hole in the ground. Without a nearby volcano, we learned this was due to geothermal activity or hot springs. These steam vents, created by geothermal heat from the Earth’s interior, are common in areas with hot springs or geothermal reservoirs. Sometimes, localized geothermal anomalies cause underground water to turn into steam, which escapes through cracks and holes. These vents are a sign of the dynamic geological processes at work beneath the surface.

We arrived at the summit just past 4 PM, greeted by the stunning yellowish-orange hues of the approaching sunset. After registering our ascent, we rested, drank hot tea, and enjoyed rice cake snacks. Our thermos pot kept our tea warm, and the rice cake was soft and satisfying despite the cold. We soaked in the breathtaking views from the summit, feeling both exhilarated and chilled by the wintry air.

During our descent around 5 PM, we encountered a lone mountain goat. Initially, we froze, worried we might startle it, but the goat seemed accustomed to human presence. If it could speak, it might have said, “Chill out, guys, I’m harmless.” This cute, lovely creature added a delightful twist to our adventure.

To ensure a safe and enjoyable hike, it’s important to come prepared with the right gear. Sturdy hiking shoes with good grip are essential for navigating the rocky and uneven terrain. Hiking sticks can provide extra stability and support, especially on the steeper sections of the trail. Depending on the season, you might also want to bring gloves and a light jacket, as the weather can be unpredictable.

Always carry enough water and snacks to keep your energy levels up, and consider packing a small first-aid kit for any minor injuries. It’s also wise to inform someone of your hiking plans and expected return time, just in case.

During the dry season, typically from late winter to early spring, Soyosan may be subject to temporary closures due to the risk of forest fires. It’s crucial to check for any closure notices or advisories from local authorities before planning your hike. Additionally, always follow posted signs and guidelines to ensure your safety and the preservation of the mountain’s natural beauty.

After a rewarding hike, treat yourself to a delicious meal at one of the nearby restaurants. Dongducheon and Pocheon offer a variety of dining options, from traditional Korean cuisine to more international fare. Enjoy a hearty bowl of bibimbap or savor some freshly grilled Korean BBQ to replenish your energy.

A roundtrip hike to Soyosan typically takes about 4-5 hours, covering approximately 6-8 kilometers depending on the specific trail you choose. This makes for a moderately challenging day hike, suitable for most fitness levels.

Soyosan Mountain is a true hidden gem in Gyeonggi Province, offering a perfect blend of natural beauty, historical significance, and spiritual tranquility. Whether you’re an experienced hiker or a casual nature lover, Soyosan promises an enriching and memorable adventure. Pack your gear, lace up your hiking boots, and embark on a journey to discover the magic of Soyosan. Happy hiking!
