Two Peaks, One Day: Are We Crazy or Just Adventurous?
Yongbongsan Mountain, a crown jewel of Hongseong, offers more than just a hike—it’s an adventure where nature and culture intertwine. Standing at a modest 381 meters, Yongbongsan may not be the tallest, but its striking rock formations and panoramic views make it a must-visit destination. The name “Yongbongsan,” meaning “Dragon Peak Mountain,” reflects its dragon-like ridgeline and phoenix head shape. Locals also affectionately call it “Palbongsan” due to its eight distinct peaks.
Yongbongsan is steeped in cultural significance. Nestled between Hongbuk-myeon in Hongseong-gun and Sangha-ri in Deoksan-myeon, Yesan-gun, it has been a site of spiritual retreat for centuries. The Yongbongsa Temple, a serene sanctuary since the Goryeo Dynasty, and notable cultural assets like the Hongseong Singyeong-ri Maaeyeoraeipsang (Treasure No. 355), a Buddhist statue from the Goryeo era, and the Yongbongsa Maaebul, a cliff-carved Buddha image, add to its historical charm.
Yongbongsan’s trails are well-maintained and accessible, making them suitable for hikers of all levels. The main trail is about 4 kilometers round trip, with an elevation gain of 381 meters. The hike is generally moderate but can be demanding due to the mix of dirt paths and rocky sections.
Expect a variety of terrains, including gently sloping paths and steeper, rocky stretches. You’ll navigate through lush forests, cross wooden walkways, and encounter impressive rock formations.
Yongbongsan is about a 1-hour drive from downtown Seoul. The total hiking distance is approximately 4 kilometers round trip, with an elevation gain of 381 meters. The hike generally takes around 2 hours at a leisurely pace, allowing ample time to enjoy the views and cultural sites.
The best seasons to visit Yongbongsan are spring and autumn, when the weather is mild and the scenery is at its most vibrant. The trails are adorned with blooming flowers in spring and a tapestry of colors in autumn, making your hike even more enjoyable.
Parking at Yongbongsan is convenient and costs around 3,000 KRW for the day. Clean bathrooms are available at the base and near Yongbongsa Temple. This ensures a comfortable start and end to your hike.
The summit of Yongbongsan offers spectacular views. From the peak, you can admire the landscapes of Deoksungsan Mountain, Gayasan Mountain, and the Yedang Plains. On clear days, the new Chungcheongnam-do Office town is visible. The rocky outcrops at the summit provide excellent photo opportunities and a chance to appreciate the stunning vistas.
Weekdays are quieter, but weekends and holidays can be busier.
For a safe and enjoyable hike, proper gear is essential. Sturdy hiking shoes with good grip are a must, given the rocky sections of the trail. Gloves can be useful for navigating these areas and protecting your hands. Hiking sticks are recommended for added stability on uneven terrain. It’s also important to note that Yongbongsan may be closed during the dry season due to fire risks, so it’s advisable to check local notices or the mountain’s official website for updates before your hike.
After your hike, head to Hanil Sikdang, a beloved local eatery known for its delicious someori gukbap (beef head meat and rice soup). Located just 10 kilometers from Yongbongsan and a short 15-20 minute drive away, Hanil Sikdang has been serving this flavorful, slightly spicy soup for nearly 70 years. If you’re in the mood for more, explore other nearby restaurants offering a variety of local dishes.
Well, they say it’s “easy peasy,” or maybe I’m just out of shape, but climbing Yongbongsan certainly drained my energy and ached my knees. While my husband Kisang was still full of energy, I was ready to head back home. The hike is short, but the relentless rocky trails and steep stairs made it feel never-ending, with hardly a flat area in sight. Thankfully, the short distance made it manageable. The reward? The view. Within just 15-20 minutes of hiking, you’re already treated to the mountain’s astonishing rugged rock formations. It’s like nature’s art, and every challenging step is rewarded with breathtaking scenery. Despite the difficult climb, it was the perfect way to wrap up the day.
