#9

The Tranquil Beauty of Cheonggyesan Mountain.

Located in the south of Gwacheon at an altitude of 618 meters, Cheonggyesan Mountain offers a serene escape from the bustling city life. This mountain is a lush haven covered by thick forests, attracting climbers and nature enthusiasts seeking forest therapy. It’s a perfect blend of nature, culture, and leisure, making it one of the most hiked mountains in the Seoul metropolitan area.

This is our second mountain of the day. We’re both exhausted, but determined to reach the peak.

Cheonggyesan Mountain is not just a natural wonder; it’s a historical gem surrounded by significant attractions. Nearby, you’ll find the Seoul Grand Park, Gwacheon National Science Museum, and Seoul Land amusement park. This makes the mountain a hub for tourists looking to enjoy culture, tourism, and leisure amidst the beauty of nature.

Getting to Cheonggyesan Mountain is now easier than ever with the new Shinbundang subway line. Simply take the subway to Cheonggyesan Station, exit 2, and walk about five minutes. Turn right at the first road, go under the bridge where you’ll find vendors selling fresh fruits and vegetables—perfect for picking up snacks for your hike. From there, turn right again at the stores and head straight to the trail entrance.

Known for being an easy hike, but then trails like this start to appear and continue all the way to the summit.
We only remember the never-ending wooden and rocky stairs as we hiked up.

At the base, you’ll find a detailed map of the mountain showing various trails. The main trail is a gentle walk through the woods, with well-built stairs making the ascent easy.

Parking is available near the trailhead, but it can be limited on weekends and holidays. Public restrooms are located at the trailhead and at various points along the trail, ensuring hikers have access to facilities when needed. There is no admission fee to hike Cheonggyesan Mountain, making it an accessible and affordable adventure for everyone.

As you hike up, you’ll be surrounded by verdant forests and occasionally glimpse views of the cityscape peeking through the trees. The trail is well-maintained with numerous steps and leveled paths, making the hike both accessible and enjoyable.

Remember to go all the way to the top—what seems like the peak isn’t the true summit. Continue 100 meters from the small marker on the large rock to reach the official peak, marked by a larger marker.

Not the actual summit, but just a few climbs away from it.

From the summit, you’ll be rewarded with panoramic views of the surrounding metropolitan area, including stunning vistas of the city and distant mountains. On a clear day, the views extend far beyond the urban landscape, providing a breathtaking backdrop to your hike.

Arrived at the peak.

Cheonggyesan Mountain is most crowded on weekends, especially Saturdays, when locals and tourists alike flock to enjoy the serene environment. Early mornings and late afternoons are ideal times to visit if you prefer a quieter hike.

While many Koreans enjoy wearing complete hiking gear, this trail does not require any special equipment. Comfortable walking shoes and casual clothing are sufficient. However, bringing along a towel and a change of clothes is recommended, especially if you plan to picnic or wade in the inviting river at the base. Air pressure cleaners are available to clean muddy shoes after the hike.

The trails are generally safe, but it’s always good to be cautious. Stay on marked paths, be mindful of your footing, especially on stairs, and bring enough water. Occasionally, you might find vendors selling drinks at the peak, but it’s best not to rely on this.

After your hike, unwind at one of the nearby restaurants offering a variety of local dishes. From traditional Korean cuisine to quick snacks, there’s something for everyone to enjoy. The vicinity around the trailhead also has stores where you can purchase hiking gear and souvenirs.
