CAPTURING SUNRISE AT GEUMGANGSAN SINSUNDAE

For outdoor lovers in South Korea, have you heard about the breathtaking beauty of Mount Geumgangsan?

While most of Geumgangsan lies in North Korea, parts of this iconic mountain are also accessible in Gangwon Province, South Korea. Known for its stunning views of Ulsan Bawi, Sokcho City, and the East Sea, Geumgangsan Sinsundae has captured the hearts of hikers, photographers, and adventurers alike. Here’s a journey through our sunrise hike to Geumgangsan Sinsundae—a trail that offers much more than just another mountain climb.

Geumgangsan, or “Diamond Mountain,” is more than just a name; it holds centuries of cultural and spiritual importance. The word “Geumgang” means “diamond” or “indestructible,” symbolizing the power to break through all mental suffering, much like the Buddhist concept of enlightenment. The Sinsundae part of the name refers to a cliffside viewpoint, creating the meaning: “the scenic overlook of Geumgangsan.” This is a place where nature and spirituality meet, creating a unique allure for visitors who come to experience its natural beauty and cultural significance.

While climbing Geumgangsan Sinsundae, don’t miss Hwaamsa Temple, an ancient site dating back over a thousand years to the Goryeo Dynasty. The temple, named “Flower Rock,” reflects the natural beauty of its surroundings, with landscapes that change color throughout the seasons. This peaceful retreat has long been a place for meditation and reflection, offering hikers a glimpse into Korea’s rich Buddhist heritage.

We began our hike at dawn, hoping to catch the first light of day. Originally, we’d planned to camp overnight at the peak to witness the Milky Way and wake up to the sunrise, but the strong winds made camping uncomfortable, if not unsafe. Instead, we set our sights on reaching the summit in time for sunrise. We weren’t alone; two other couples were ahead of us, a reassuring presence on a night hike with such challenging weather.

Stunning Rock Formations Beneath Night Skies

Hiking in the pitch-black forest felt familiar after completing multiple BAC 100 Peaks Challenge hikes, but the cold and wind were our main concerns. Temperatures were dropping close to winter levels, and the sharp winds near the peaks made every step a challenge.

Sunrise Just Moments Away

The trail leading to Geumgangsan Sinsundae offers a beautiful mix of easy paths and moderate climbs, making it both accessible and rewarding. As you trek through dense forest and rocky paths, the anticipation builds as you get closer to the peak. The hike itself takes about 2 hours to complete, depending on your pace.

Geumgangsan is known for its unique rock formations and boulders, especially near the summit, where massive rocks create natural photo spots. These rocks or boulders served as our wind shields, and as the first hints of dawn appeared, we were mesmerized by the silhouettes of the landscape. Every rock, every angle seemed to capture the perfect sunrise moment.

We reached the summit just in time. The deep purples and blues of the early morning sky transformed into vibrant oranges and pinks as the sun peeked over the horizon. The wind was harsh, but the view was more than worth it. Standing there, enveloped in nature’s beauty, felt like pure magic.

Sunrise Views from the Peak

From the peak, we caught sight of Ulsanbawi, a renowned rock formation we’d previously only admired in photos. The experience was everything we had hoped for and more.

Despite the relentless wind, we lingered at the top for another half hour, savoring the view and the solitude.

It’s the perfect backdrop for reflection, a sanctuary from daily stresses, and a reminder of life’s simple, grounding joys. In my daydreams, I’m there, soaking up the calm, feeling reconnected to myself.”

Again! If you’re interested in Milky Way photography, this mountain is perfect. The clear skies and minimal light pollution offer an excellent opportunity to capture the stars—especially with Ulsanbawi in the frame.

“In the mountains, I find a home for my spirit, a sanctuary where peace flows as freely as the rivers.”

When the sun fully rose, it was time to say our goodbyes to the mountain.
